Borderline Personality Disorder Treatment - (BPD) and Emotional Dysregulation

When emotions, relationships, and a sense of self become difficult to navigate, the right support can make a difference.

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) can involve intense emotions, difficulties in relationships, changes in one’s sense of identity, impulsive behaviors, and periods of significant emotional distress.

At Reclaim Recovery & Healing Center, we provide structured mental health treatment for adults and adolescents experiencing BPD and related difficulties. Our approach goes beyond managing individual symptoms. We work to understand the emotional, relational, and experiential patterns underlying distress while helping individuals develop greater stability and flexibility in their lives.

Understanding Borderline Personality Disorder

BPD affects people differently. For some, emotions can shift rapidly and become overwhelming. For others, the greatest difficulties may occur within relationships or around feelings of rejection, abandonment, shame, or uncertainty about who they are.

BPD may involve:

  • Intense or rapidly changing emotions
  • Fear of abandonment or rejection
  • Difficulties in relationships
  • A fluctuating sense of identity
  • Feelings of emptiness
  • Intense anger or frustration
  • Impulsive behaviors
  • Difficulty tolerating emotional distress
  • Self-destructive behaviors
  • Recurring emotional crises

These experiences can be exhausting and can make it difficult to maintain relationships, work, school, or other responsibilities.

What Does Emotional Dysregulation Look Like?

Emotional dysregulation can take many forms.

You may experience:

  • Intense anger or irritability
  • Rapid changes in mood
  • Anxiety that feels difficult to contain
  • Feeling overwhelmed by sadness or shame
  • Difficulty calming down after becoming upset
  • Strong reactions to rejection or criticism
  • Impulsive responses during periods of distress
  • Relationship conflicts that escalate quickly
  • Emotional numbness or disconnection
  • Difficulty identifying or expressing what you feel
  • Feeling like your emotions are controlling your behavior

Emotional Dysregulation Isn’t a Diagnosis

Emotional dysregulation can occur alongside BPD, depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, trauma-related conditions, and other mental health difficulties.

It can also occur without fitting neatly into a single diagnosis.

That is why treatment should begin with understanding the individual rather than simply assigning a label.

When Weekly Therapy Isn’t Enough

Some people with BPD have participated in individual therapy for years but continue to experience recurring crises, intense emotional reactions, or difficulties that interfere with everyday life.

PHP and IOP provide a more structured level of support while allowing individuals to continue living at home.

Emotional dysregulation can affect people at different stages of life. At Reclaim, we work with adolescents and adults experiencing difficulties managing intense emotions, relationships, impulsivity, anxiety, trauma-related symptoms, and mood instability.
